GP-Power e30 2,7turbo
Hi,
while we working on the BMW e30 M3 M30 Turbo http://server.pure-pf.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=56019 Walter decides that he need a BMW for some Dragraces, so he was watching around and found a cheap e30 with a M20 2,7Turbo with nice parts on and in it.
Specs of the fresh bought e30:
- MegaSquirt MS2
- 2.7 Block, Stock Pistons, Stock Rods Stock head
- M21 Crank
- Valvetrain was PPF, the complete kit without camshaft.
- Mickey Thompson DOT tires
- Garrett GT3076r
- OBX exhaust manifold
- 76mm exhaust
- Tial 38 Wastegate
- Wired headgasket
- ARP headbolts
- Front mounted Intercooler
- "race fuel tank"
- 044 Bosch fuel pump
Car runs gut but with 500°C exhaust temperature...
After some mapping the car runs at nearly 900°C and produces some more horsepower =)
The body of the car was in bad kondition, welded sun roof and things like that. So we have to paint the car.

Then: the first race...
Bad track konditions in Hocknheim and the car runs with the M/T DOT tires a 12.3@193
Between all the V8´s you cant hear the car. So we put a short exhaus on the car
After a bend rod because of a leaking head gasket while mapping the car it runs very smoth
Next race we runs a 12.2@195
After this we went to Bitburg, DAS Drag Day, meeting for VW Bugs. They tell us the grip is the best you can get on a unprepairt tarmac. The 16Vampir Golf MKII runs his 8.65@265 there.
500km and 8 hous took the trip to Bitburg. We arrived on a cold rainy September day. Next Day, sunshine 23°C, perfect!!
Old setup: M/T Tires, small exhaust, open net filter and starting in 2nd gear - 12.0@200
next run the same but starting in 1st gear 11,75@200
Run on Hoosier Drag Tires -> 11.0@200
Next day 10,92@207

- 42,4 Stainless steel exhaus manifold
- PPF Camshaft
- new engine block with sunken cutting ring
- PPM rods
- new stock pistons

- Aluminium race fuel cell
- bended stainless steel fuel rails from cell to the engine bay

- 90mm exhaust
- e36 diff cover
- 45% locked diff

thank´s, we try to manage that for the next race. The current camber is less then the original BMW but still positiv.

After the race at the BMW meeting the head was cracked and we had to fix that in 3 day´s befor Bitburg. After Bitburg the engine block was cracked =( never heard if that before. The car runs at 2,5 bar boost at that moment.
That was the "out" for the best event in Germany, Hockeheim. Last year was the worst track condition ever, this year the best ever =(
German records was breacking ever hour, the most impressiv one was from the Golf MK1 1,8 20VT from Adrenalin Tuning, he runs a 9,009@249kmh with round about 700hp and DSG

Before the next race, after the engine was put together we drive around for checking everything. There we broke the gearbox... but that was the shifting problem at the Summerevent. One shift fork has no tight fit on the shaft.
We correct the camber to +0,35°, more wasn´t possible.
On 21-22.09 we went to Bitburg, again to DDD means DAS Drag Day, a big Bug meeting. Without shifting problems and 2,0bar boost the car runs constant mid 10 sek, best time here was a 10,266/230kmh
The last to runs was done with 2,5 bar, and.... yeah crack the head again =(
Last weekend we went to the last event, also in Bitburg, thats the best track in germany, and it´s without glue(!) We had two weeks for maschining a new head and put all stuff back together.
Best time here was a 10,374/228 km/h.

Do i understand you correct if you run stock pistons, and forged rods?
I am in the process of building an m20b25 with m21d24 cranckshaft and oilpump. m20b20 top which is welded, machined to b25 size combustionchamber, tougher valve springs (PPF steg 1) and Z45 turbo cam shaft. Is it wise to get forged rods? If so, what advantages is it to run stock pistons and not forged? How much horsepower is it safe to run on such an engine with forged rods and stock pistons?

Yes correct, stock pistons with a bit compression reduction to ~ 8,5:1 and PPM Rods.
It doesn´t make that much sense but for saving money... or testing. The original stuff is much stronger then expected. The pistons getting 80lbs/min of air at 2,7bar with e85 last year, and no problems at all.
Stock Rod´s are bend at the last race in 2012, so the can handle up to 1,5bar at our set up.
So it is definitly wise to get h-beam or I-beam rods. I also recomended to use HD rockers.
With all that the engine is a monster =D

Thank you for a good answer. Maybe i should get the rockers and rods then, to see if i can get 550 whp from it on E85 without killing my engine.
No, sorry, cannot help you, my cylinder head is on its way to PPF for welding. But i bet that the PPF guys can tell you what to do.

this year nothing happend, car was on the Dyno putting out 857hp / 977Nm.
After that we have a broken piston.
So new pistons came from DP engineering in greece. With the new pistons we put a MME Engine Managment in it. Car runs now with 2 air flow sensors and runs lambda oriented. So the Fuelmap is generating by air flow and rpm =D
But as we went to the dyno, the fuel pump broke down and after fixing with a Aeromotive pro series the head fails again...
Can anybody help with knowlege to reinforce the head of the M20b25 engines?
Next week the car will be running again this time with a new AMC head, not welded, is that a problem? Looking forwart to install a new one in a few weeks after Dyno =(

The AMC head is good.
I ran one many years ago, not welded, 1.8 bar boost, no issues what so ever.
And many others has had the same experience.
The only thing is that the ports are a bit smaller than the OEM head, so a little bit of work there and your good to go.
