BMW E30 Street/TimeAttack (DTM style control arms)

Post by Miuge »

Hi everybody!

Me and two friends of mine started a team called Magnus Racing a few years ago, now it's time to make it more official.
We lived in the same city in Finland and we still have our garages down there. Everyone has their own car to build, aim is to go faster without looking bad.

Like us on Facebook to see those other projects and more updates:

This thread is for my BMW E30 built to streetlegal TimeAttack racer.

Everything started from this, orginal BMW 320i 1987:
Image

In few months I had bought and done a lot of stuff and car looked like this:
18" wheels http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x281 ... asa007.jpg
D2 coilovers and 325i disc brakes http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x281 ... aan011.jpg
Headers http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x281 ... C03164.jpg
Typ188 differential http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x281 ... ivusta.jpg
Powerflex bushes http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x281 ... saa006.jpg
Sparco seat and Momo wheel http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x281 ... taa002.jpg

By that time I had made all the chassis work to make it rust free, good subject to start a bigger project.

BMW was hold in the garage for few years and I only scraped some stuff together:
M30 engine http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x281 ... rsu007.jpg

Recent years I've done more or less, at least I've tried ;)

Got BBS RF wheel centres today, they're from 8x17" ET40 wheel:
Image

Fitted them to my friend's car which has 325mm discs with Wilwood Superlite calipers, needed 15mm spacer to fit.
I'm planning to buy same discs (E46 M3) and Cayenne/Touareg 6-piston calipers in front. There won't be too much space:
Image

Also made little room to rear seat area so I can make the new shock towers.

I had to make more room for the rear axle as it didn't fit as high as I wanted, next step is to modify body beams if that's not enough.
Otherwise there would be problems with trailing arm and output shaft angles with desired drive height.

New plate allowing even more lift of the axle if needed, now there's about 4cm space above the carrier:

Today postman brought this quick release/snap off hub for steering wheel, it would have been very hard to climb in and out of the car when the rollcage is finished with the door X-brace.

Now I'm waiting my custom K-Sport coilover kit, it's based on the Circuit -model, but customized at the factory to my needs.
Front coilovers are E36 M3 type and rears E34 type which are a lot shorter than E36 or E30 shock.
They should arrive soon.. :P

Coilover order came today, thanks for K-Sport Finland for an easy and fast transaction!

Looking good

I need to design topmounts to the front with 4-bolt fastening, which allows me to make caster adjustment into the chassis. Also rear end topmounts need a little bit of modifying, thinking of spherical bearing instead of solid mounting.

Now I got all the parts to finish the rollcage, lot's of work on the way!

Started with the front end last weekend, now it starts to take form.

This was the beginning, only showing approximate location of the top:

Took this picture today, other half almost ready:

And another:

Placing of the roll cage tube:

Also made a 3D model of the front top mount, just needs to be machined:

Caster adjusment will be made like this with longish holes, that's why I'm not using 3-bolt top mounts:
Image

Little ride height testing again, it will still lower a few centimeter:

Almost there..
Axle is now 5cm higher than orginal mounts would allow, that should (must) be enough. Only need to cover the holes with sheet metal, piece of cake 8)

Massive brakes :?: Guess does the caliper fit with the E36 king pin? Nope, needs "a little" modification too

Compared to 1,5liter bottle:

I have found out that a 1 Series 135i 6 piston caliper, will bolt upto a e36 m3 spindle with a small spacer to center it on the rotor, I used an e46 330i rotor with it on my e30 project.

Yes I've also heard about that, but those seem to be pretty rare and expensive, way more expensive what I paid of my set of Porsche calipers :)
Well, still could keep on looking if someone is selling BMW ones cheap, I've got things to do before fitting the brakes..

Not much progress with the car last days due to working all day, but I have to try this week. And next week we'll go to Gatebil Mantorp, as usual 8)

But, I've done little modeling and measuring in my 'billet steel rocker arm' project. Bought a new orginal rocker arm and got it measured at job.
Image

Maybe we'll get something like this:
Image
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x281 ... 8bc6be.jpg

Also bought a new fuel cell, 60liter JAZ, which will be placed just about down there:

Check out our facebook page, there should be some updates of BMW E21 project soon
