BMW1502 M42 turbo

Post by Crazy belgian »

Hi, first of all, i don't know if i'm at the right part of your forum here, but i'll place my topic and if it doesn't belong here you guys may remove it.

Let met introduce myself quickly, I'm Olaf living in Belgium and currently working on a BMW 1502.

My goal: Around 250-300 WHP, should be fun in such a light car! (especially whit classic looks ;))

Planning engine work:

-318 IS M42 motor
-original rods
-original reworked pistons (modified dome for lowered CR)
-ACL recing series bearings
-ARP studs, head -and crankshaftbearings
-original Camshafts (timing sorted out)
-MLS headgasket 0.120'' (about 3mm)
-CR 7.5 till 8
-Homecrafted equal lenght exhaust manifold
-TDO5-16G turbo (lancer EVO6)
-BMW K1200RS Throtlebodies
-KMS standalone Motormanegement (it's a dutch company anybody heard of it yet?)
-ofcourse an intercooler etc...
-i'll be running E85 fuel (have to go to germany to get it! )

Planning Body&suspension:

-lowered & reinforced suspencion (i'll have to fabricate a kit myself, there isn't much to find for the 02's)
-323I discs in front & alfa romeo GTA 4pot calipers
-disc upgrade in the rear
-complete interieur will stay original
-no roll cage

So, that's the basic stuff i'm planning to do. It's going to be a daily driver (it's replacing my souped up Alfa 156 1.9JTD  )

Here some pictures! i'll keep you guys posted!

Hello and welcome.

Nice project.

Regarding the cr, leave it at stock cr 10:1 if you are going to run e85.
Don't hassle with modding the pistons, and go for cooper ring gaskets from ppf or oring the block with oem style head gaskets.

Good luck...

Hey, thanks for your input! E85 is a new fueltype for me, so i don't know the exact possibilities!
Wat kind of boost is possible with E85 and CR 8.8 ? (thikker headgasket is olready ordered!)

I took tis BMW as example for my set-up http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_cmJh7gIcU" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
it's running 1.5 bar boost, with a CR of 7.5 (due to rods & pistons from a M52b25)

I totally agree with xelerator, leave the CR stock if you use E85. I have a 318is which is completly stock and it delivers 327hk at the moment.

KMS is known in sweden, the swedish dealer is actually member of this forum :)

Btw, i love those old 02:s and your choice of engine is perfect for that light car!

Oke, in that case i only will use the MLS headgasket, I'll get around CR8.8 (maybe its even better so i can experiment with different fuels! :))
the oldskool model is indeed lovely! that's the reason i've chosen it above an E30.

What turbo, pressure, and fuel do you use? :o (engine-horses or rearwheelhorses?)

Thanks a lot! for commenting, and information:)

it's ordered and payed, only thing left to do is to recieve it  then i'll be able to tell you more! (including pictures)
If it's not usable it's only 50 euro's trown away.
I expect that i only have t modify de distance between the bodies. (diameter should be 42mm each:) )

First i need to weld and prepare the body for paint. That my first priority. After that i'll have to assemble it with all original parts. (doomned technical control in belgium ;))

&then, al brakes loose and getting the other engine in!

Hi, I bought them from someone who wanted to use them for his kitcar. Never happend, so a nice price and they where mine :)

They aren't made for a 02-series. but for a ford sierra. I've done some research an they should be pretty easy to mod!
Pictures of the trothlebodies comng soon:)

As you can see, de distance between the bodies is realy easy to modify (just make another rail with different holes:))
the bodies came with the positionsensor, stationairadjuster, and electronic shoke control.

Welding has still to be done!
After welding the gasket surface will be milled to be perfectly even.

Nice project! I think that the 42mm throttlebodies is great for an m42, probably much better than the 50mm s50 ones :) Go for stock compression ratio if you are going to use e85! with a fine tuned map you can easily boost 1-1.2bar on gasoline anyway, and at least 1.5-1.6bar on etanol. but if you are lowering the compression ratio, go for gasoline, i had an engine with machined pistons and arp headstuds, about 9:1cr, and 1.6bar boost with no problem :)
318iS Turbo | Kompsänkt (svarvade kolvar) och arp toplocksbultar annars original motor, även originalt ommappad styrsystem :) 1.6bar på 95 oktan :)
