The reason it's running rich (ie too much fuel in the air/fuel mixture) is that the fuel is being used to cool the pistons to prevent them from melting. Some of the last 'turbo era' F1 cars did the same thing. It's pretty much the only way to get massive outputs from small turbocharged blocks.
